THE "TREE OF LIFE"

Coconut is "The Tree of Life". It is all of these: a seed, a fruit and a nut!​

 

Every part of the coconut has been used in different ways in many countries by the locals for hundred of years. From its root, to the produce itself, coconut is such a versatile fruit that its benefits are endless.

HARD SHELL

This is the outer hard cover pat of a coconut. Used as charcoal to provide environmentally friendly fuel in restaurants, the shell is also seen in many forms of handcrafts, as buttons, as drinking vessels, or musical instruments used by the locals.

LEAVES

In many parts of the world where coconut palm trees are planted, local people have been benefiting from palm leaves for centuries. They use the leaves as roofing material for houses, and to wrap rice for cooking. They are very well used within weaving industry for making hats, baskets, storages and boxes.

FLOWERS / SAPS

The coconut flowers are used in creating apparels. Sap found in flowers can be used in making alcohol and vinegar. The sap is usually boiled in order to make syrup, which is then processed and fermented to produce alcohol or vinegar.

It is very common to see the use of coconut's sap for a production of syrup and coconut palm sugar to use for cooking.

​

It is believed that some medicines can also be extracted from this part of coconut.

MEAT

Coconut meat is the white flesh inside a coconut. It is rich in several important minerals, especially manganese and copper. The meat is widely used as a cooking ingredient in South East Asian and many other cuisines around the world.

Coconut meat can be eaten fresh, shred to produce coconut milk, dried to make chips and even heated to extract coconut oil. It can be turned into various kinds of products and offers many health benefits.

TRUNKS

Due to its beautiful grain and attractive natural appearance, coconut wood can be a promising material for the manufacture of furniture, novelties and other handicrafts. High value coconut wood products include furniture, decorative interior walls as well as parquet floor.

Furthermore, its trunk and other sawmill residues are readily usable for charcoal making and for the production of energy.

​

In some parts of the world where coconut palm trees are found, they are used for constructing homes and other structures within the homestead. This can provide and alternative to other less sustainable hardwoods.
